Supplements For Chronic Inflammation & Weight Loss: A Closer Look

We’ve all heard of protein powders but usually when we think of taking these products we think of frequent gym-goers or competitive body builders.

But there are many different protein powders available on the market for more health uses. 

Many people like to evaluate protein supplements by grouping them into “bad” or “good”. Instead I prefer to evaluate them based on the desired outcome. 

They should be considered as a “supplement” to a well rounded diet and as such should be used only as an add-on and not for long periods of time.

Whey protein is one of the most popular and most common. It comes from cow milk and many people use it to fuel their workouts. 

Casein powder is another popular choice. Casein is the central protein in milk, but compared to whey protein it can help you feel fuller faster. 

Egg white protein is a great option for those that cannot or prefer not to eat dairy. Instead of cow milk, this powder comes from egg whites.

Soy protein is another choice for those with specific diets or preferences. This powder is made from ground soybeans and just like egg whites they are a good protein source.

Pea protein is a less common option, but still a good powder for those that are looking for a protein option and do not want to consume animal-based products or soy products. This powder comes from the yellow pea.

Hemp protein is becoming more and more popular. This powder is made from hemp seeds and contains good sources of protein and fiber.

What Supplements Help With Weight Loss?

Two protein powders, casein and hemp, can both help with weight loss. 

Casein and hemp protein do not have a direct effect on boosting metabolism or shedding fat. 

Instead these powders work by helping you to feel fuller faster. Take before your main meal in an effort to reduce the amount of food you consume by feeling full sooner.

By giving you that “fullness” feeling, casein and hemp protein can help you avoid overeating or falling off your regimen which is where many people struggle with weight loss or diets in general. 

Casein and hemp protein also make a great low calorie option to supplement into your diet. 

Along with that, hemp protein specifically has anti-inflammatory properties that are important when it comes to weight and healthy digestion.

What Supplements Help With Chronic Inflammation?

One of the best supplements for inflammation is Turmeric. This ancient spice is a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. 

Turmeric is believed to affect multiple inflammatory pathways including IL-1beta, TNF, PG pathways, and the COX2 pathways.

Boswellia is another powerful anti-inflammatory agent that may affect several inflammatory pathways in particular the COX2 pathway which is probably why it works so well with Turmeric.

Ginger has mild anti-inflammatory effects but is a good remedy to take for pain associated with inflammation.
